Score by Emmy-Nominated Composer PATRICK JONSSON
OTHER MOMMY, from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, is in theaters nationwide today
LOS ANGELES, CA – October 9th 2026 – Back Lot Music announces the release of the OTHER MOMMY Original Motion Picture Soundtrack with music by Emmy-nominated composer Patrick Jonsson, who also composed the music for the Oscar®-nominated documentary Virunga and the 2023 horror hit The Boogeyman. The film, from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, hits theaters nationwide today in North America, and the album is available everywhere digital music is sold and streamed. Additionally, the album is now available to preorder on vinyl by Waxwork Records.
“Composing the score for Other Mommy was a dream,” Jonsson writes. “It gave so much opportunity to explore and to embark on sonic and musical worldbuilding. The idea I latched onto immediately was this notion of the character of Other Mommy having something that’s not quite right about her. A feeling that something’s off. This is what I wanted the score to embody — a dissonance, like there’s always something twisted hiding under the surface. That uncanny-valley tension, the recognizable rendered strange. This all became the creative compass for everything that followed.
“I wanted to explore how we could create sounds that felt like they were both organic and synthesized at the same time,” Jonsson says. “This pursuit led me to an incredible (and unusual) instrument called the daxophone. There are very few instrument makers in the world who still make this instrument and I was fortunate enough to stumble upon John Jansen, who built me a bespoke one and made me a number of ‘tongues’ for it. It has this uncanny ability to sound like a human voice but yet not at the same time. It’s something almost impossible to describe; you just have to hear it. In fact, vocal exploration became central to the score’s identity in general. I called upon the help of extraordinary singers Erin Birgy and Sally Stanning, and together we explored unusual approaches to capturing and articulating the voice: microphone experimentations, singing into drums and resonating chambers, manipulating projection and resonance to produce haunting, otherworldly textures. The work was extensive both at the point of capture and in post-processing. Beyond that we also recorded a 22-piece string orchestra in Berlin, where experimentation sessions explored unconventional orchestrations and performance techniques that brought all kinds of twisted and unstable colors to the score. It was all just a joyous playground of possibilities.
“This was among the most rewarding scoring experiences of my career,” Jonsson says. “I hope the work resonates with people and that its strangeness feels, in the end, like it comes from a place of deep curiosity and that it transports people back to the unique world of the film.”
